Lawrence Plantation will host “Summer

Smash,” a mixed doubles tennis tournament and community social event on Saturday.

The event is sponsored by Kent Ellington Cosmetic and Family Dentistry and will include almost 30 mixed doubles teams for fun and competitive tennis but there’s also a social aspect to it as well.

Rome residents are welcome to watch the matches on Saturday and enjoy a party in the pool area when the tennis is done for the day. The party will feature live music by local musician Scott Thompson.

Lawrence Plantation general manager Todd Williams said the public is welcome to come out and enjoy the tennis and the facilities. There will be seating available but visitors are welcome to bring their own chairs and watch as much of the tennis as they like. There is a bar available to purchase beverages.

The matches will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday but Williams said there is a lot more to enjoy at the club.

“In addition to five outdoor and two indoor tennis courts, we have an Olympic size swimming pool, an event space for parties, weddings and class reunions and we have a big parking lot,” he said. “We also hold events such as karaoke every Friday night and from time to time we’ll feature live music. All these social events are open to the public.”

He added that club members can use the golf course paths for walking and biking.

Williams said Lawrence Plantation (which is located off Horseleg Creek Road and is the former Horseleg Plantation Country Club) is what he would call Rome’s family club, offering plenty of opportunities for kids and adults to have fun.

“It really is a family atmosphere,” he said.

“And you don’t have to live in the neighborhood or even on Horseleg to be a member. Anyone can join. I think a lot of people forgot about this place since ownership changed ten years ago. Or they were unsure about what’s out here. I invite everyone to come out and see what we’ve got to offer and to have a great time.”

The club is located off Horseleg Creek Road at 127 Winding Road.
