Oak Hill & The Martha Berry Museum is hosting a new free exhibition, “Palaces for the People: Guastavino and America’s Great Public Spaces,” beginning Monday.

Over the course of 61 years, architect and innovator Rafael Guastavino Moreno and his son Rafael Guastavino Exposito created more than 600 unique tile domes and vaultings in the United States. Their work revolutionized structural engineering and outlined a new standard for safety and beauty in architecture.

Significant landmarks such as the Ellis Island Registry Hall, the Boston Public Library, and the Biltmore Estate feature their iconic vaulted ceilings, as do the Ford buildings at Berry College.

“Palaces for the People” is a traveling exhibition of specially commissioned color photography by Michael Freeman and trademark Guastavino Company drawings.

Since Berry’s Guastavino vaults were only recently rediscovered, a supplementary display, “Guastavino at Berry,” will accompany the original exhibit. Archival documents and personal artifacts related to the Ford buildings and the Guastavino Fireproof Construction Co. will be on display for the first time.

“The design of the archways at the Ford buildings capture many visitor’s attention. However, after learning about the Guastavinos and their immense contributions to architecture in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the vaults become even more stunning,” notes Rachel Mclucas, interim director and curator at Oak Hill & The Martha Berry Museum.

To celebrate the exhibition, admission is free for the duration of the show, which runs through Oct. 23. Tours of the Oak Hill home will have an adjusted price.

Reservations are required and can be made at https:// berry.ticketspice.com/oakhill-tours. For more information, visit https://www. berry.edu/oakhill/.

ATLANTA — Georgia court officials say they are hopeful jury trials will resume in March given the recent decline in coronavirus cases along with the rollout of vaccines.

State Supreme Court Chief Justice Harold D. Melton signed an order on Sunday extending for another 30 days a statewide judicial emergency that suspends the trials because of concerns about COVID-19. But the order says the surge in virus cases that led to the suspension “appears now to be declining.”

“Assuming that conditions generally continue to improve, it is anticipated that the next extension order on March 9 will authorize superior and state courts, in their discretion, to resume jury trials as local conditions allow,” the order says.

Melton said courts have worked on safety plans for the resumption that comply with public health guidance and guidelines put together by a judicial task force.

Jury trials pose challenges for efforts to contain the coronavirus because they require large numbers of people to come to court locations.

Court officials in Georgia lifted the ban on jury trials in October but reinstated it two months later due to a rapid increase in coronavirus cases.

Judges told state lawmakers last month it could take Georgia’s court system years to dig out of piled-up cases because of the delay.

ATLANTA — Atlanta Hawks forward De’andre Hunter will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right knee and be sidelined for an extended period.

Hunter already has missed four games due to knee discomfort caused by wear and tear. He will undergo a lateral meniscus arthroscopic debridement procedure on Monday in Atlanta.

The surgery will be performed by Dr. Kyle Hammond, the Hawks’ team orthopedist.

The team said it will provide an update on Hunter’s recovery plan about two weeks after the procedure.

Hunter, the No. 4 overall pick in the 2019 draft, is the Hawks’ third-leading scorer at 17.2 points per game.

Atlanta has endured a rash of injuries in the first six weeks of the season, including the extended absence of top free-agent signee Bogdan Bogdanovic.
