Floyd County Commissioners will be holding a public hearing and taking a vote Tuesday regarding a special use permit request for a tree service on Chulio Road.

The Rome-floyd Planning Commission recommended denial of the application in a 6 to 2 vote.

Several neighbors oppose the special use permit, stating the business creates noise pollution and it violates certain code sections regarding the vehicles, operation of equipment and moving of logs.

Commissioners will allow 10 minutes for both those in favor and in opposition to present their arguments.

During the meeting, commissioners will be paying special recognition to the trail advocacy group TRED for their fundraising work that went to the Redmond Trail project.

They will also be reading a proclamation for the 50th anniversary of Adventhealth Redmond.

Under the consent agenda, commissioners are expected to accept a grant for the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas to cover costs related to the North Georgia HIDTA Task Force.

The consent agenda — voted on as a single item — also includes an agreement with AT&T for maintenance following the renovation of the E-911 Department.

Caucus will begin at 4 p.m. on the second floor of the Floyd County Administration Building at 12 E. Fourth Ave. The regular meeting will take place in the Community Room at 6 p.m.

During caucus, the board will be discussing the county millage rate.

Last year, the county voted to lower the property tax rate by .202 mills, making their millage rate 9.678 mills. They had previously raised it by .4 mills to offset the cost of a public safety employee raise in 2020, but lowered it again after property tax collections went back up.

After they’ve decided what to do with the millage rate, they will have to hold three public hearings before they vote to adopt it before the summer ends.

The Floyd County school system has already voted to lower its millage rate from 18.20 mills to 17.95 mills.
