CALHOUN — A Saturday night shooting at Walmart sent one teenager to the hospital with a serious injury in an incident that police say may be gang-related.

Meanwhile, charges have been added against a 15-yearold arrested in connection with a shooting at an apartment complex last week.

According to Calhoun Police Department reports:

A 15-year-old boy was shot in the leg at the Calhoun Walmart, 450 W. Belmont Drive, sometime between 10:30 and 11 p.m. Saturday, during a fight with individuals thought to be from out of town.

“From what we’ve heard, he was part of an altercation with a group from Rome,” Calhoun Police Chief Tony Pyle said, adding that the incident was possibly gang related.

The shooter left the scene before police officers arrived and was still at large on Sunday.

Struck in a femoral artery, the injured teen was taken to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga where he underwent surgery, and was alive as of Sunday morning.

“We will continue working this (case) through the day,” Pyle said.

Pyle also noted that the juvenile arrested in connection with a Thursday shooting at Calhoun Lodge apartments, 200 S. Line St., is facing additional charges.

The incident sent a man to the hospital with a gunshot wound and led to a brief chase that put the Calhoun Primary/elementary School Complex into lockdown mode.

A 15-year-old boy was taken into custody following a brief search Thursday morning. Pyle said the motive appears to be robbery.

The man who was shot in the stomach was taken to Atrium Health Floyd Medical Center in Rome for treatment. Pyle said he is expected to recover from his injury.

The teen has been charged with aggravated assault, robbery, possession of a firearm by a minor, and possession of a stolen firearm, according to the chief.
