Rome/floyd County picked up 1,700 jobs between February 2023 and last month, based on the latest state Department of Labor estimates. Some 47,600 people were working in the county through last month, down from the December peak of 48,100, which was fueled in part by the Christmas retail season. The market also grew by 100 jobs last month compared to January’s report. There had been a 600-job drop after Christmas. The increases were evident in the number of first-time jobless claims filed with the labor department last month. A county-by-county look shows: Floyd: 207 first-time claims in February, down 78.3% from January and by 44% from February 2023. Bartow: 214 claims, a 75% decrease from January and down 19% year over year. Gordon: 246 claims, the highest in the market but still down 68% from January but just a 6.5% drop from a year earlier. Polk: 94 claims, down 62% from January and by 27.1% from February 2023. Chattooga: 49 claims, a 78% drop from the previous month and 83% slide from a year earlier. Statewide, Georgia’s February unemployment rate was 3.1%, unchanged from a revised 3.1% in January.

The county reports are expected later next week. Some highlights from the labor department press release: Jobs were up to 4,938,200, an all-time high. The labor force was up by 5,237 to 5,335,272, another record.

The number of employed was up by 8,458 to 5,171,733, an all-time high.

The number of unemployed was down by 3,221 to 163,539, the lowest figure since July 2022.
