Enough of President Trump

- Cynthia Haley Novi

I didn’t vote for Donald Trump, but when he won I was determined to support the new president, as I always have in the past, especially since I knew that many well-intentioned people of faith had voted for him. I hoped (and prayed frequently) that he would grow in wisdom and humility once in office, as many presidents had before him.

To be honest, I have often voted for candidates, on either side of the partisan divide, based on my perception of their integrity and how I thought their policies could improve our country, who ended up losing the election. It has almost always been possible to respect the winners and their efforts to make our country better from their political perspective, even when I disagreed with some of their decisions.

This time is different. Unfortunately, this president is more deserving of our pity than our respect. He seems incapable of understanding or respecting the rule of law, much less placing any value on the lives of the people he is supposed to be serving. Instead, he constantly resorts to the kind of lying and name-calling that few of us would allow on the part of our children.

On the eve of 2020, I was breathing a sigh of relief that while Donald Trump had continually acted only in his own best interest, and often to the detriment of our country, we had almost made it through his term without a devastating catastrophe. At least he had not started World War III or blown up the planet. Then, goodbye relief and hello pandemic! With only 4% of the world population, the U.S. has at least 25% of the coronavirus cases. Well over 100,000 families have lost their loved ones, and there is no decrease in sight. The sadness is overwhelming, but still he has done nothing to improve the situation.

Now, it’s a matter of life and death. It’s not about winners and losers. Time to elect someone we can respect, even if we may not agree with every detail of his platform. I hope that many of you will join me in voting for Joe Biden.
