The 118-year- old Royal Oak Woman’s Club is having a “Save Our Historic Clubhouse” yard sale on Saturday, Oct. 17.

The event is from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the clubhouse, 404 S. Pleasant Street at the corner of Fourth Street.

“Come join our ladies for a fun yard sale while helping us raise money to maintain our historic building,” said Club President Sylvia Sopata in a statement. “In addition to hundreds of gently used items, visitors can purchase our famous spaghetti sauce, Rada cutlery and engraved commemorative brick.”

Built in 1839, the clubhouse is the oldest building in Royal Oak and is on the historic registry.

Much of the club’s funding is raised by renting the building for parties, showers, concerts and other events.

But the COVID-19 pandemic has put all such rentals on hold, and the club has lost funding that is necessary to maintain its building.

The ROWC was founded in 1902 and is housed in a building that was Royal Oak’s first Baptist Church and later the first village town hall, according to the club’s website.

It is a nonprofit group dedicated to community improvement through volunteer service.

Members volunteer to promote good citizenship, support education, and highlight and take part in civic activities.

If there is rain on the scheduled yard sale day, the event will be hosted the next day on Sunday, Oct. 18.

Credit cards at the yard sale will be accepted for purchases of $10 or more.
