Rochester, Stoney Creek get off to historic starts
Football in the city of Rochester is strong in 2020.
Rochester and Stoney Creek are both trending towards historic seasons. As always, Rochester Adams can’t be overlooked either .
Rochester is 3- 0 for the first time since 1993. Stoney Creek is 3- 0 for only the third time ever. And their steamrolling opposing teams.
Anchored by a veteran offensive line, Stoney Creek can rush the ball with the best around. Senior Cam Burford and sophomore Jon Fogler form a fierce tandem in the backfield. Burford has run for almost 500 yards and scored 10 touchdowns.
“Cam’s a workhorse, he’s tireless and tenacious in his running style,” said Cougars head coach Nick Merlo of Burford’s prowess rushing the rock.
In his second year starting under center, senior quarterback Ryan Eckhout is a game manager that can thread a needle when needed. He threw two touchdowns in Stoney Creek’s 55- 0 smashing of Farmington last Friday.
“This team takes no short cuts, we’re meeting the challenge every
week and playing hungry,” Merlo said.
Rochester’s sophomore quarterback Alex Bueno has been downright breathtaking in taking the Falcons to their best start in 27 years. Their averaging close to 50 points per game. Bueno scored four touchdowns (two passing, two rushing) in Rochester’s 42-20 win over Bloomfield Hills last week. His efficiency was impressive, connecting on 8- of-12 passes for 195 yards through the air. He threw three touch
downs inWeek 2’s 41-16 defeat of Auburn Hills Avondale.
“The kind of poise he shows out there goes way beyondhis young age,” said Rochester head coach Erik Vernon of Bueno’s breakout sophomore campaign.
Bobby Kronner is a baseball star and Bueno’s top target in the passing game. Kronner caught two scores last Friday. Preston Schroyer is another twosport standout that can change the game when he touches the ball. Senior running back Xavier Spann can do a little bit of everything in the Falcons running attack and is slippery for potential tacklers.
Adams is 1-2, but still dangerous. The Highlanders’ two losses were by a total of four points. Parker Picot, the Highlanders sophomore starting field general and cornerback, can be electric on either side of the ball and on special teams during returns. Picot is already committed to Alabama to play baseball.
