The Milford boys cross country team claimed its first Oakland County championship since 2012 on Friday, besting a competitive field at Kensington Metropark.

Milford posted a final score of 88, which edged second-place Novi. The Wildcats scored 94, while Stoney Creek came in third with 116.

Due to safety precautions, the race was broken up into four different segments this year, with no more than 10 teams competing at once. Results were then all tabulated together to determine scores.

“We embraced the challenge of competing in such a quality field. The format reinforced the lesson of control what you can control, and don’t worry about what you can’t control,” Milford coach Brian Salyers said. “Our boys stuck together as a team and were tough down the stretch.”

The Mavericks had two of the top 10 and three in the top 15 lead the way. Senior Kazuma Bowring finished second overall with a time of 15:44.4. Senior Jack Lobodzinski finished 10th with a time of 16:25.3.

Also placing for Milford was junior Ryan O’Rourke in 15th (16:32.7), junior Easton Williams in 22nd (16:46.9) and junior Tyler Ristau in 39th (17:11.2).

Novi was led by senior Miles Brown, who finished seventh ( 16:16.9). Junior Mihir Gupta placed 12th (16:28.1), senior Matt Gustitus was 13th (16:28.4), sophomore Griffin Conway was 27th ( 16: 56.1), and sophomore Ben Gnatek was 35th (17:06.7).

Farmington’s Peter Baracco was medalist of the race with a time of 15:43.1. He edged Bowring by a second. Stoney Creek’s Tristan Brandenburg was a close third with a time of 15:46.4.
