Michigan saw its seventh straight day with more than 3,000 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday.

With 3,106 new cases, the seven- day average has reached another high, up by about 100 cases, at 3,389 confirmed cases. And the positivity rate topped 10 percent on Monday, even as the daily number of diagnostic tests exceeded 40,000.

The state was also near 10,000 new cases for the month of November, just three days in at 9,815.

This has left Michigan with 187,995 confirmed cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.

The state also added 43 deaths to the total death toll, which reached 7,400 on Tuesday. Of those deaths, 17 were from reviews of vital records. The 43 deaths matched the update from Oct. 22, and both are the highest single- day report since May.

The update came as the worldwide caseload topped 47.2 million people and deaths topped 1.21 million, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. In the U. S., 9.33 million cases have been reported and 232,000 deaths have been tied to the disease. Texas surpassed California in caseload with both at more than 940,000. Michigan ranked 14th, between Pennsylvania and Alabama.

Over, including the probable cases, Michigan had 207,763 cases and 7,761 deaths.

And the recent spike in caseload has seen Michigan identify more COVID-19 cases in the past week — 23,721 — than in the entire month of September, when 22,219 were reported.

Local results

In Metro Detroit, Oakland County added the most, with 354 new cases pushing the total number of confirmed cases 22,907.

Wayne County, excluding Detroit, was up 312 cases to end the day at 23,764.

Detroit, though, continued its lower trends with just 81 cases for a total 15,875

Genesee County added 95 cases to jump too 6,548, while Washtenaw County added 72 cases for 5,325 total confirmed cases.

In mid-Michigan, Gratiot County, where Alma, is located saw a jump of 25 cases to reach 588, while Isabella County added just 10 to hit 1,073 cases. To the north, Clare County added just three to land at 307.

Trends

The positivity rate has continued to rise, even as more testing is finding more cases.

In recent days, the tests results received numbered:

• 42,000 on Monday

• 59,000 on Sunday

• 37,000 on Saturday

• 49,000 on Friday. Throughout the summer, the daily positivity rate was generally between 2% and 3%, and in later August, it occasionally topped 4%.

But it wasn’t until October, that the positivity rate generally crossed above 4%. By the end of the month, though, it was topping 6% and reaching as high at 8% or 9%.

On Monday, the positivity rate was just below 10.5%. On Sunday, it had been about 7.2%.

During the first peak in the pandemic in Michigan, in March and early April, the positivity rate was in the 30% to 40% range; however, at that point far fewer tests were given, between 3,000 and 6,000 a day.

In May, when positivity rates would occasionally jump, diagnostic tests were still only given at 13,000 to 19,000 a day.
