South Lyon East drops out of semifinal due to COVID-19
The South Lyon East volleyball team was forced to forfeit its regional semifinal match tonight due to COVID-19, thus putting an end to their season.
The MHSAA listed this afternoon that the Cougars had forfeited their scheduled Division 1 regional semifinal match against Dearborn Divine Child tonight at Dearborn.
South Lyon East Athletic Director Greg Michaels confirmed the decision was due to COVID-19 related circumstances.
“Starting the season with tryouts on a grass practice field, the team has overcome the challenges of the pandemic all season long,” Michaels said. “The East volleyball community will come together and take- on this latest challenge. This team is truly exemplifies the meaning of our mantra - Be East!”
South Lyon East was cochampion of the Lakes Valley Conference during the regular season. The Cougars were 7-1 and tied Walled Lake Northern for the title.
They then went on to win the Lakes Valley Conference Tournament prior to the postseason. During district play, South Lyon East defeated Brighton, Pinckney and South Lyon to win a district championship.
The victory over South Lyon went five games and gave the Cougars their first district championship in program history.
Divine Child now gets a bye into the regional final. It will face the winner of the other semifinal at Dearborn between Novi and Allen Park.
South Lyon East wasn’t the lone team to have to forfeit on Tuesday. Otisville LakeVille Memorial also had to forfeit in its Division 3 regional semifinal matchup with Breckenridge.
Last week, Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes had to forfeit its district championship match with Auburn Hills Oakland Christian.
