Local clothing company donates 20% of sales to women’s shelters

Helping women and children who have escaped abusive home lives has been important to Mike Ash ever since he lost a close friend to domestic violence.

In 2011, Ash got the idea to help the nonprofit Detroit Rescue Mission by selling bundles of granola bars, trail mix and bottled water to customers at Rust Belt Market in Ferndale. For each one sold, he would give a bundle to the organization.

“It sounds super cheesy, but the idea came to me in a dream,” said Ash.

Since then, Ash’s dream has grown. He started a clothing company called Attack Hunger, and 20 percent of all proceeds go towards local shelters that care for at-risk women and children. He sells printed tees, hoodies, bags and socks, and most of his designs include a shark graphic.

“I was watching ‘Jaws’ while drawing different concepts on a notepad. The movie ended, and I went to take the DVD out of the player. After looking at the iconic shark swimming to the surface, I knew that I wanted something like that to be the logo,” he said.

In the last six years, with the money raised, Attack Hunger has been able to deliver thousands of pounds of food to the Detroit Rescue Mission, Interim House, Alternatives for Girls and the Y.W.C. A.

Ash sells his products at Rust Belt Market, 22801 Woodward Ave, Ferndale on weekends and at The Artsy Umbrella, 3017 Twelve Mile Road, Berkley. To shop online, visit attackhunger. com.
