Fire set to Pontiac apartment with mom and 2 kids inside
Fire was set to a Pontiac apartment on Fiddis Avenue early Wednesday morning, occupied by a woman and two young children who were able to escape unharmed.
According to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, the 22-year-old woman said a smoke detector awakened her shortly after 2 a.m. She smelled smoke, saw a fire burning in her kitchen and then evacuated with her 2-year-old and 9-month-old children. Deputies called to the scene found a beer bottle with a burning cloth inside, smelling strongly of gasoline. Deputies extinguished the fire prior to a crew from the Waterford Regional Fire Department arriving.
The sheriff’s fire investigators have so far determined that someone had entered the apartment through a sliding glass door that was unlocked. The woman said she had no idea who might want to harm her or her kids, according to the sheriff’s office.
