Two authors and an illustrator based in Ferndale with their Monsters Rule! Books business will lead a virtual library storytime and a drawing workshop next month.

“We were excited to discover a small local business creating picture books for kids pretty much in our own backyard,” said Jordan Wright, head of youth services at the Ferndale Library, in a statement. “So, this exclusive Zoom event is going to be a fun and interactive means of introducing our young patrons to these new authors, while also giving them a chance to doodle from home.”

A new book series created by three friends, Monsters Rule! Books are written by Kevin Singer and Joel Gullickson, and illustrated by resident Brent Mosser.

The trio’s first book, “The Legend of Long Leg Larry,” was published recently and aimed at children ages 2- 4.

At 6:30 p.m. Dec. 10, Gullickson and Singer are set to lead the library’s storytime for kids on Zoom, and answer parents’ questions afterward. Mosser will then do a draw-your-ownmonster demonstration for children, who are encouraged to have a pencil and paper on hand so they draw along at home.

Children can then share their monster drawings on the Zoom event if they want to.

Monsters Rule! books are intended to help raise creative, compassionate and funny kids, according to a statement, and instill a lifelong love of reading.

Gullickson said Monsters Rule! “was born out of equal parts creative history and pandemic-induced boredom.”

He and co-author Singer have been friends since elementary school and play music together in the band Chronic Tan.

An admirer of Mosser’s work, Gullickson said in a statement he pitched Singer on the idea of collaborating on stories and submitting them for Mosser’s approval after the pandemic hit.

Thus, Monsters Rule! Books was born.

Parents can sign up for the upcoming events by emailing jordan@ferndalepubliclibrary.org
