New coronavirus cases and deaths rose again in Michigan on Thursday, with confirmed cases now topping 380,000 and deaths approaching the 9,600 mark as fears of an economic slowdown from increased virus activity haunts the holiday season.

Numbers released by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Department show 7,144 new confirmed cases of the virus and 175 new deaths Thursday, pushing the totals to 380,343 confirmed cases in Michigan since the pandemic swept the state in March and 9,580 total confirmed deaths.

On Thursday, the state reported 666 new cases of the virus and 18 deaths in Oakland County. There were 520 new cases and 18 deaths in Macomb County, and 690 new cases and 19 deaths in Wayne County, excluding Detroit.

By comparison, the state tallied 190 new cases and four deaths in Detroit.

But the surge in cases and deaths from the virus isn’t local to southeast Michigan, according to state numbers.

Numbers for Kent County Thursday 507 new cases and 16 deaths, and there were 577 new cases and four deaths in Saginaw County.
