State reports over 6K new cases, 193 deaths on Saturday

Statewide total reaches 395,036 cases, 9,854 deaths

Over 6,000 new cases of coronaviru­s were reported in Michigan on Saturday, according to the state’s website.

There were 6,004 new cases and 193 new deaths quoted in the state on Saturday, making 395,036 total cases and 9,854 total deaths.

These counts exclude probable cases and deaths linked to COVID-19 and include only confirmed cases and deaths.

At least 145 of the 193 new confirmed deaths on Saturday were identified during a vital records review, which are conducted regularly by the state.

Statewide trends

December has continued November’s trend of adding coronaviru­s cases in the thousands, with more than 5,000 new daily cases added per day in just 5 days.

So far, the month has seen 34,579 new cases and 720 deaths, averaging about 6,919 new cases and 144 new deaths per day.

In comparison, the same period on November added 19,626 new cases and 130 new deaths, averaging 3,925 new cases and 26 new deaths per day.

This means December is already adding cases and deaths at a higher rate than at the beginning of November.

The month of November ended with a total of 182,269 new cases and 1,794 new deaths recorded, the most reported in one month since the start of the pandemic so far.

Testing

Health officials have also been tracking results of statewide testing. So far, 7,041,377 diagnostic tests have been conducted.

As of Friday, a total of 197,750 Michigande­rs have recovered from COVID-19 (30 days out from onset of illness), a total which is

updated by the state every Saturday.

Worldwide context

According to Johns Hopkins University, worldwide on Saturday, the number of cases reached over 66 million with deaths at over 1.5 million.

In the United States, over 14.5 million cases have been reported with more than 280,000 deaths tied to the disease.

Michigan ranks as the ninth state in the U.S. with the most total number of deaths, with New York as first.

The state is also ninth in the the nation in cases, Johns Hopkins says, with California as first.

Tally of cases

In the Detroit area on

Saturday, Macomb County reported the highest number of new cases at 608, making 39,503 total cases. And, it had 16 new deaths, making 1,278 in the county.

Wayne County, excluding Detroit, followed with 568 new cases, making 43,890 cases. And, it had 23 new deaths, making 1,528.

Oakland County was next with 537 new cases, making 44,112 total cases. And, it had 16 new deaths, totaling 1,353.

Last in the Detroit area was the city of Detroit with 277 new cases, making 21,663 cases; and, it also had 7 new deaths, totaling 1,606.

In mid- Michigan, Isabella County had 23 new cases, totaling 2,459, Gratiot County had 19 new cases, totaling 1,692, and Clare County had 5 new cases, totaling 787.

As far as deaths, Isa

bella County and Clare County had no new deaths, while Gratiot County had 3 new deaths.

In other areas of the state, several areas had over 100 cases, including:

• Kent County, with 349 new cases, making 34,336

• Genesee County, with 326 new cases, making 14,667

• Ottawa County, with 198 new cases, making 14,514

• Saginaw County, with 175 new cases, making 9,202

• Ingham County, with 118 new cases, making 9,759

• St. Clair County, with 116 new cases, making 4,633

• Kalamazoo County, with 109 new cases, making 8,928

The Michigan Depar tment of Correction­s ( MDOC) also added 633 new cases, making 15,388.
