Applicants sought for open seat on city commission
The City Commission is again putting out a call for applicants to fill an open seat on the commission.
The deadline is 5 p.m. Dec. 16 to fill out an online application on the city website at romi.gov.
One person will be chosen to fill the unexpired term of former Commissioner Randy LeVasseur, who resigned suddenly Nov. 23 in a letter to the city clerk, saying he and his wife were moving out of the city.
Whoever city commissioners appoint to the position will serve until the next city election in November 2021. Applicants have to be registered voters in the city and residents of Royal Oak for at least a year.
Printed copies of the application are available through the city clerk’s office.
This is the second time since September that the commission has had to appoint a member.
City Commissioner Brandon Kolo was appointed to fill the seat of the late commissioner Kim Gibbs, 48, who died following a diabetic coma in August.
Gibbs and LeVasseur, endorsed by Republicans, were friends and colleagues who often voted together against the five-member majority members on the commission, who were elected with Democratic support.
“I knew my vote was very much a minority one and not going to make very much difference,” LeVasseur told the Daily Tribune last week after his resignation.
Mayor Michael Fournier has said he hopes the commission can name a new appointee to the body by the end of the month.
City commissioners are paid $20 for each meeting they attend. The annual pay is capped at $1,200.
