Shark attack puts surfer competition on hold
A World Surf League event in Hawaii was suspended indefinitely Tuesday after a recreational surfer not involved in the competition was attacked by a shark. The unidentified victim, described by the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) as a 56-year- old man from the area, was reportedly in stable condition after being taken to a hospital for surgery (via KHON).
The incident took place before the scheduled 10 a.m. start of the day’s competition at the Maui Pro, a women’s event set to run Dec. 4-15 at that island’s Honolua Bay. According to Maui Now, safety personnel on hand for the surfing event were able to provide first aid after getting the victim.
