NHS students help fill local food pantries
Wal l ed La ke Cent ra l tea chers Shanell Eastman and Renee Dorfman led National Honor Society students in organizing a food drive for the community.
The drive took place on Saturday, Nov. 21, at the high school. With support from the community, student volunteers collected 3,000 pounds of food, 100 rolls of toilet paper, and a $1,620 donation for Hospitality House Food Pantry, based in Commerce Township.
Volunteers also received more than 100 essential item kits for the Student Pantry, which included toilet paper, paper towels, toiletries, canned fruit, protein and birthday celebration packages, in addition to a $1,310 donation.
The Student Pantry was founded by teen Sydney Urbaniak after realizing that many of her classmates at Walled Lake Schools were in need of clothes, school supplies and food. The pantries are located at Wixom Elementary, Glengary Elementary, Hickory Woods Elementary, Loon Lake Elementary, Walled Lake Elementary and Walnut Creek Middle School. They allow students to obtain the supplies they need at no cost to them while respecting their privacy.
Dorfman said, “A big thank you to our community. Their generosity will make such a difference to many families in need during this very difficult time.”
