Former county stars to enter WSU HOF
Wayne State adding two former county stars to Hall of Fame
Wayne State University announced its 2021 Hall of Fame class and it includes some former Oakland County standouts.
The 2021 class includes Women’s Basketball National Player of the Year Shareta Brown, GLIAC Baseball Player of the Year Brad Guenther, fourtime All-GLIAC women’s tennis player Yahsha Moore, first WSU women’s outdoor track All-American Jen Rock, two-time national champion diver Dylan Szegedi, and two-time All-Region softball shortstop Sue Verbeem.
“Every year when we go through this selection process, it is a challenging and difficult vetting reflective of the talent, success and leadership indicative of our student-athletes,” WSU Director of Athletics Rob Fournier said in a press release. “This class is no different. Six outstanding people representing six different sports is evidence of the quality and achievement across all our sport programs. I think I can speak for the entire committee when I say, this is a deliberative and reflective process, but in the end, the class underscores all the qualities we champion as an athletic department and university.”
Moore was a 2011 graduate of West Bloomfield High School after playing four years at the varsity level. Moore was a two-time All-State selection and a state semifinalist as a freshman and a finalist as a sophomore.
At Wayne State, Moore holds the program record with 97 doubles victories. She also is third all-time in singles victories with 87. Moore finished her Wayne State career with a 18449 record. She was All- GLIAC First Team as a senior, junior and sophomore, while earning Second Team honors as a freshman.
Currently, Moore is an assistant coach for Wayne State’s tennis team and is in her third season with the coaching staff.
Brown began her prep career at Pontiac Northern before transferring to Grand Blanc High School as a junior. She graduated from Grand Blanc in 2011.
In her college career that included two seasons at Detroit Mercy, Brown reached over 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. She also finished with 72 career double- doubles. Her final stats were 2,570 points and 1,384 rebounds, 281 assists, 201 steals and 92 blocks.
Due to COVID-19, the 2021 Hall of Fame ceremonies have been pushed back from late February to Sept. 11 and will be held in conjunction with the home football game against Truman State.
