At least 50 units were damaged in a fire at a self storage facility in Troy early Wednesday morning, Dec. 16.

The volunteer Troy Fire Department was dispatched at about 12:30 a.m. on a report of smoke and flames seen at Extra Space Storage, 11 50Coolidge Highway, south of Maple.

Upon arrival, firefighters found the large one-story storage unit building with flames through the roof.

Firefighters deployed water and firefighting foam and used gas-powered saws and hand tools to gain access to the individual storage units, according to a statement from the Troy Fire Department.

Due to the large number of units involved and the heavy fire load within the units, additional manpower was needed and a second alarm was requested.

More than 40 firefighters faced below freezing temperatures working on scene for nearly seven hours to extinguish the fire, the statement said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and damage estimates are incomplete.

All of the affected storage unit renters will be contacted by Extra Space Storage.

No injuries were reported.
