New infections rise above 3,000 again

After a decrease in daily COVID-19 cases per day over the holiday weekend, Michigan reported 3,414 new confirmed cases Tuesday, Dec. 29.

Michigan also reported 193 COVID-19 deaths Tuesday. Of those deaths, 105 were identified during a vital records review.

The state’s total numbers are now at 483,922 confirmed cases since the onset of the pandemic, with 12,282 deaths attributab­le to COVID-19.

Oakland County was the hardest-hit zone in southeast Michigan, with 496 new cases and 22 deaths.

Wayne County, excluding Detroit, fared similarly, with 400 new coronaviru­s cases and 20 deaths. Within Detroit city limits, 121 cases were reported, and 12 deaths.

Neighborin­g Macomb County reported 292 new cases, with 20 COVID-19 deaths.

Kent County continued to be a hotspot in the state, registerin­g 205 new cases. The Michigan Department of Correction­s, which has shown large increases recently, saw only three new cases Tuesday.

In mid- Michigan, Isabella County reported 32 new cases, Gratiot County reported 13, and Clare County reported 17 cases.

Within Michigan, around 71,000 people have received the first two rounds of the Pfizer and Moderna coronaviru­s vaccines.

The Associated Press reported the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has received over 231,000 doses of the vaccines from both companies.
