Three-day total starts new year off with nearly 9K new cases reported

On Saturday, a three-day total of 8,983 coronaviru­s cases and 265 deaths due to the virus for Thursday, Friday and Saturday was reported in Michigan, according to the state’s website.

This averages to about 2,994 cases and 88 deaths occurring per day over the three-day period, which included New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. In total, Michigan has 497,127 cases and 12,598 deaths, numbers which do not include probable cases and only include confirmed cases.

The same three day period a month ago saw 10,428 cases and 98 deaths on Monday, Nov. 30; 5,793 cases and 190 deaths on Tuesday, Dec. 1; and 6,955 cases and 81 deaths on Dec. 2.

This is a total of 23,176 cases and an average of 7,725 cases per day, as well as 369 total deaths, averaging 123 deaths per day.

So, compared to the same three- day period a month ago, this is a decrease of 14,193 total cases and 104 total deaths.

This is an increase of an average of 1,258 cases per day. And, it is a decrease of, on average, 35 deaths per day. These counts exclude probable cases and deaths linked to COVID-19 and include only confirmed cases and deaths.

Health officials have also been tracking results of statewide testing. So far, 8,202,753 diagnostic tests have been conducted.

As of Wednesday, a total of 363,611 Michigande­rs have recovered from COVID-19 (30 days out from onset of illness), a total which is updated by the state every Saturday.

According to Johns Hopkins University, worldwide on Saturday, the number of cases reached over 84.4 million with deaths at over 1.8 million.

In the United States, over 20.3 million cases have been reported with nearly 350,000 deaths tied to the disease.
