State reports 2,706 new virus cases, 222 deaths

More than 2,700 cases of coronaviru­s were reported in Michigan on Saturday, according to the state’s website.

The 2,706 cases and 222 deaths due to the virus on Saturday brings the state to 519,082 cases and 13,354 confirmed deaths.

At least 207 of the 222 new confirmed deaths were identified during a vital records review, which are conducted regularly by the state.

These counts exclude probable cases and deaths linked to COVID-19 and include only confirmed cases and deaths.

Health officials have also been tracking results of statewide testing. So far, 7,871,299 diagnostic tests have been conducted.

As of Friday, a total of 284,731 Michigande­rs have recovered from COVID-19 (30 days out from onset of illness), a total which is updated by the state every Saturday.

According to Johns Hopkins University, worldwide on Saturday, the number of cases reached over 89.2 million with deaths at over 1.9 million.

In the United States, nearly 29 million cases have been reported with over 370,000 deaths tied to the disease.

Michigan ranks as the eighth state in the U. S. with the most total number of deaths, with New York as first.

The state is also twelfth in the the nation in cases, Johns Hopkins says, with California as first.
