A man delivering groceries Tuesday night in Royal Oak was shot during a carjacking.

Royal Oak Police Chief Corrigan O’Donohue said the driver is a 47-year-old Canton resident who works for Amazon and was delivering groceries from Whole Foods.

“We’re still investigating and don’t have anything on motive yet,” O’Donohue said, adding it is unknown if the assailants had profiled the driver and followed him.

Royal Oak police Lt. Albert Carter said in a statement the man was in the 700 block of South Gainsborough when the shooting happened shortly before 9:30 p.m.

Two unknown men approached the delivery driver as he was getting the groceries organized to be delivered.

The men “demanded the victim’s

keys, wallet and cellphone,” Carter said. “The victim complied and was shot in the leg as he ran away.”

The driver was shot after he gave up his belongings and was running up the driveway of the house to which he was making the delivery.

Police said the pair of carjackers fled in the delivery driver’s vehicle, driving south on South Gainsborough.

The area where the crime happened is between Lincoln and Sixth Street, five blocks west of Campbell Road. The stolen vehicle is described as a gray 2007 Toyota Camry with a license plate number 5MPN71.

The two men police are looking for are described as black and in their early 20s.

One is about 5-foot-11 and 160 pounds, police said. The other is described as 5-foot10 and 190 pounds.

The delivery driver was taken to Beaumont Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

“He’s going to be OK,” O’Donohue said.

Royal Oak police are investigating the case and asking anyone with information about the carjacking to contact them.
