U.S. House of Representatives recognizes VFW Post’s 75 years
In recognition of the 75th anniversary of Oxford VFW Post 334, U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-Holly) paid tribute to the members’ service to veterans and the community.
While speaking on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives, Slotkin said, “VFW Post 334 is committed to making a difference in the lives of veterans. By praying for those deployed, supporting their families at home, providing a forum to gather and share experiences from service, and honoring those who are no longer with us, the VFW preserves the bonds that are forged through military service.”
“I want to thank Quartermaster Chuck Haskin, Senior ViceCmdr. Randy Stetson, and Post Commander Jim Hubbard for their leadership and service to the North Oakland community. The spirit of VFW Post 334 is perhaps best said by Commander Hubbard: ‘We honor the dead by helping the living.’”
Slotkin hand-delivered and presented Hubbard a framed certificate of her speech, entered into the “Proceedings and Debates of the 116th Congress, Second Session.”
Hubbard said, “Posts don’t always stay together for 75 years, and we’ve pulled together. … This award was a surprise. What a nice lady. She came to my door and presented it. It was such a wonderful thing for her to take the time out of her busy schedule to do what she did for our post and auxiliary, and we appreciate it.”
VFW Post 334 was recognized in 2019 as a Michigan All-State Post for the third year in a row, and most recently, it was awarded the Diamond Jubilee Award, given to VFW Charters that have demonstrated exceptional service for three-quarters of a century.
During the holidays, the post sent presents to returning veterans and their families; provided more than 100 children with winter coats, hats, mitten, gloves and scarves; placed wreaths on veteran’s graves and donated Thanksgiving meals to children,
seniors and people who are homeless.
Post Chaplain Jim Muys said, “We work hard to better the community in which we live, and we thank the community for the generous support that they give us. Without the community support, we could not do what we do for the community. I am just proud to be a member of this post and to be associated with the members.”
