Emagine Entertainment Inc., a national theater chain, has acquired the historic Birmingham 8 Theatre.

The downtown Birmingham theater was renovated over the past several years with reclining seats and updates to the screens and sound system.

The theater will not undergo any changes, according to a release from Emagine.

“The iconic marquee will also remain unchanged and continue to be a trademark of the theater,” the release said.

The theater, 211 S. Old Woodward, will be called the Birmingham 8, Powered by Emagine.

It will continue to play art house and first-run films, the release said.

“As a Powered by Emagine theater, patrons can expect the same great service and amenities the Emagine brand is known for, including expanded concession items, craft beer, cocktails, wine, large candy selections, Coca-Cola Freestyle machines, popcorn and a healthier option of OlivEpop popcorn,” the release said.

The theater, which premiered in the 1920s, is closed but Emagine plans to open it within 90 days.

“We are pleased to welcome the Birmingham 8 into the Emagine family,” says Paul Glantz, Emagine chairman.

“The community of Birmingham can be at ease knowing we plan to maintain all its charm under our ownership. We understand the value this theatre has held in the community and are committed to continuing that legacy while enhancing the consumer experience with all the virtues our brand will bring.”

Emagine also operates another movie theater in downtown Birmingham, the Palladium, 209 Hamilton Row.
