New cases below 1,000 for second day

New confirmed cases of coronaviru­s in Michigan remained below 1,000 for the second straight day Wednesday.

The state health department reported 915 new cases and 12 deaths, bringing the state’s total to 570,895 cases and 14,977 deaths since counting began last March after the start of the pandemic.

Cases and deaths have continued to decline in the new year after spiking higher in November, and as more vaccines are administer­ed.

As of Tuesday, the state had distribute­d 2,022,350 doses of the vaccine. As of Monday, 1,339,129 doses of the vaccine had been given, including 181,916 in Oakland County, 135,414 in Wayne County, 100,919 in Macomb County, and 36,701 in Detroit.

Through Feb. 5, the state estimates 498,495 people have recovered from the deadly virus that has roiled the state’s economy and closed schools and public venues in the past year.

In Wednesday’s updated numbers, there were 103 cases and no deaths in Wayne County, 89 cases and no deaths in Oakland County, 84 cases and one death in Macomb County, and 20 cases and no deaths in Detroit.

Elsewhere in the state, there were 25 cases and one death in Genesee County, 49 cases and no deaths

in Ingham County, 104 cases and two deaths in Kent County, and 43 cases and one death in Ottawa County.

In rural mid Michigan, there were three cases in Clare County, two cases in Gratiot County, and six cases in Isabella County. There were no deaths in any of the three counties.

There were no cases and no deaths reported in 12 of Michigan’s 83 counties.
