- By Joette Kunse For MediaNews Group

Nathan Clark, senior at Clarkston High School, and Bailee Pfahl, senior at Our Lady of the Lakes in Waterford, were presented with Good Citizen awards by the Daughters of the American Revolution’s Sashabaw Plains Chapter.

The Good Citizen award is given to students from area high schools who possesses the qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism in their homes, schools and communities. The students participate by completing an application and writing an essay.

This year’s essay topic was “Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving It: How do the combined actions of so many good citizens keep our nation moving forward?”

Clark wrote in his essay, “I am reminded of classic American moments where citizens symbolized our nation. The men who stormed Normandy, Neil Armstrong stepping on the moon, and the men who defended the union at Gettysburg, show a citizenry that is deeply committed to America. These weren’t elites, these were normal citizens who loved our country.”

In Pfahl’s essay, she wrote, “Our views are what help shape the policies and values the United States upholds. We have the power to inspire others while taking action to create change, and it is our responsibility to use the voices and freedoms that we have been given to help facilitate the progression of our nation.”

Clark and Pfahl were presented with certificates and a monetary reward. Clark plans to attend the University of Michigan Ann Arbor and study political science and public policy. Pfahl plans to attend Michigan State University and study economics.

The Sashabaw Plains Chapter has presented the Good Citizen award to a high school senior at Clarkston Schools since 1958 and to Our Lady of the Lakes High School since 1986. For more information, visit outlawless.wixsite.com/spdar.
