New Michigan coronavirus cases remained below 1,000 Thursday but 85 deaths were added to the state’s total after a state review of vital records.

The state health department reported 888 new cases. Of the 85 deaths, 72 were added after vital records were reviewed.

In all, Michigan has had 578,091 confirmed cases of the virus and 15,273 deaths since counting began last March after the start of the pandemic.

The number of cases and deaths from the virus fell through the summer but began rapidly rising in late September before beginning to fall off in December.

Of Michigan’s 83 counties, 21 of them reported no cases or deaths Thursday.

As has been the case, however, the largest number of daily cases and deaths reported have tended to be in the state’s more populous counties, particularly southeast Michigan.

There were 112 new cases and eight deaths reported in Oakland County, 56 cases and 10 deaths in Macomb County, 98 cases and 10 deaths in Wayne County, and 32 cases and nine deaths in Detroit.

In other parts of the state, there were 29 cases and two deaths in Genesee County, 36 cases and two deaths in Ingham County, and 71 cases and four deaths in Kent County.

In mid Michigan, there were four cases and two deaths in Gratiot County, three cases and two deaths in Isabella County, and one case and no deaths in Clare County.

As of Tuesday, the latest date available, health agencies had vaccinated 1,699,504 people against the virus, an increase of 42,289 doses administered over the previous day.
