ROCHESTER HILLS » Southfield A&T played big on both ends of the court in the clutch Friday, rallying for a 51-45 win on the road at Rochester Adams in OAA White action.

Adams led 26-22 at halftime and 38-34 after three quarters. A&T took its first lead of the night with a minute to go when senior guard A.J. Davis stole the ball on defense and then on the Warriors ensuing possession on offense, drove baseline for a lay-up in traffic to give his team a 47-46 advantage.

On the next defensive stand made by A&T, senior center and team captain Caleb Banks blocked an Adams shot in the paint and pushed the ball ahead to Xander Dixon, who was fouled and hit 1-of-2 from the free throw line with 23.2 seconds remaining to make it 48-46.

Then, it was Antonio King’s turn for the Warriors. His steal and an Adams foul sent Davis to the line where Davis drilled a pair of free throws with 13 ticks on the clock to make it a twopossession game at 50-46. Speedy A&T reserve guard Malik Taylor blocked a 3-pointer by Adams in the closing seconds, and Dixon sank another free throw to account for the final score.

Jaylon Mack fired in a game-high 16 points for the winning club. Davis scored 14 points and dished four assists, and Banks posted a doubledouble of 10 points and 10 rebounds. Banks is signed to play football at Louisville on the defensive line.

“Hard work, man, this is what happens when you go to work every time down the floor and you keep a relentless never-say-die attitude,” the high-energy 6-6 Banks said. “Our intensity, our focus, and most of all our defense came through for us in the end.”

Mack, responsible for several critical buckets and steals in the Warriors comeback effort, pointed to his head after the victory.

“The mental toughness we showed tonight was the difference,” he said.

Davis credits the entire squad with getting down to business in the final quarter Friday.

“We were all locked in, we never stopped competing and good things happened as a result,” he said.

A&T is 1-2 on the year. The Warriors lost to Adams (3-2) at home last week. Freshman forward Brady Prieskorn had 16 points and seven rebounds for the host Highlanders in the loss. Prieskorn’s frontcourt mate, Jonny Ursuy, logged 12 points and eight boards for Adams as well.
