New cases of coronavirus in Michigan soared above 3,000 Wednesday but the net number of new deaths announced by the state dropped to zero with the pandemic now in its second year.

The state health department announced 3,164 new cases of the virus, but the zero deaths was a net number.

After daily adjustments in state records, there was one death each in Sanilac, Roscommon and Livingston counties, but two removed from Detroit’s daily tally and one from Chippewa County.

New cases are trending higher in the more populated areas of the state even as more and more people are vaccinated against the virus.

There were 425 cases in Macomb County, 420 in Oakland County, 387 in Wayne County, and 147 in Detroit.

Elsewhere in the state, there were 178 cases in Kent County, 135 cases in St. Clair County, 96 cases in Genesee County, 84 cases in Ottawa County, 83 cases in Kalamazoo County, and 71 cases in Ingham County.

In mid Michigan, there were two cases in Clare County, three cases in Gratiot County, and 18 cases in Isabella County.

Eleven of Michigan’s 83 counties reported no new cases or deaths.

Meanwhile the percentage of people age 16 and older who have been vaccinated against the virus reached 25.6%. The state’s goal is 70%.

In all, 2,074,532 people have been completely vaccinated against the virus, an increase of 59,000 over the previous day, including 276,990 in Oakland County, 163,679 in Macomb County, 230,483 in Wayne County, and 76,694 in Detroit.

While more shots of the vaccine have been given in the more populated areas of the state, coverage against the vaccine is higher in the less populated areas.
