Hamilton, Solomon heading to NAIA ranks

- By Scott M. Burnstein

Troy’s D’Anthony Hamilton and Waterford Mott’s Tray Solomon are going to be heading into state tournament play next week with tickets to play their college basketball in the NAIA.

Both found homes at the next level in recent days. Hamilton (65) plays on the wing and singed with Concordia. Solomon (6-0) plays in the backcourt and inked with Siena Heights.

The previous two seasons, Solomon won LVC titles with his Corsairs. He’s slick with the ball and slippery going to the rack.

“Tray can do a lot of different things with the ball in his hands,” Mott head coach Sean Moore said. “His style of game is suited for college. The upside he brings is pretty obvious.”

Hamilton came to Troy last year from Ferndale, where he never suited up for a game. He played on the varsity team during his freshman year at Detroit East English Village. Last winter, he missed the first half of the season with an injury, so his upside at the next level is substantial as well.

“The kid is a workhorse,” longtime Troy head coach Gary Fralick said. “He’s healthy and hungry and just a really tough performer. The work ethic, the motor, the length, the athleticism, there all there for him to have success going forward.”

The Captains Log

Waterford Kettering has hired

Bob Chiesa as its new football coach.

He replaces Ken Schmidt. Chiesa previous headcoaching experience was at North Farmington in 2017 and 2018.

Before landing at North Farmington, he was an assistant at Waterford Mott, Walled Lake Western, Walled Lake Central, Walled Lake Northern, Milford and Hartland. At Walled Lake Western, Chiesa won two state titles. In college, he was a student manager under the legendary Bo Schembechler.

Kettering went 2-5 last fall. The Captains haven’t qualified for the playoffs in a non COVID-19 season since 2013.
