Lakeland baseball squad improves to 3-0

A recap of high school sporting events reported to The Oakland Press on Tuesday night:

BASEBALL

• LAKELAND ROLLS: The Lakeland baseball team picked up a three-game sweep of Walled Lake Central over the last few days to open their 2021 season.

In the two games on Monday, the Eagles won 11-0 and 12-2.

Tate Farquhar and Ryan Abray combined for a no-hitter in the opener on the mound while Caden Duryea and Matthew Hanneman each had two hits and a RBI. The second game saw Don Slone get the win on the mound with three strikeouts. Kevin Krill, Mason Brown and Andrew Platt each had two hits while Farquhar scored three runs.

In Tuesday’s series finale, Lakeland got a 10-0 victory. Duryea earned the win on the mound with four strikeouts. Nolan Hull added two hits and two RBI.

• TROY ATHENS 13, COUSINO 4: The Troy Athens baseball team picked up a 13-4 win over Warren Cousino on Tuesday.

Hunter Pidek struck out 10 over five innings on the mound to get the win.

Austin Pokley had three hits, while Riley Weber, Sean Walsh and Jake Thompson each had a pair of hits for the Red Hawks.

• LAMPHERE 5, BLOOMFIELD HILLS 4: Madison Heights Lamphere edged Bloomfield Hills on the diamond on Tuesday, 5-4.

A two-run fourth inning was what led the Rams to the win, as KJ Whitman and Drew Webster each scored.

Aiden McGinnis was credited with the win on the mound, while Justin Mexico got the save.

Noah Atherholt, Dylan Mordarski and Whitman each had multiple hits in the victory.

• CANTON 9, WL NORTHERN 7: The Walled Lake Northern baseball team dropped a close game with Canton on Tuesday, 9-7.

Johnny Stepek had two hits and scored two runs to lead the Knights, while Ty Stepek had two RBI.

Nick Skiver drove in four runs with a pair of hits.

• SHRINE SWEEPS CABRINI: Royal Oak Shrine picked up 14-4 and 9-1 wins over Cabrini on Tuesday.

Owen Pullis and Drew Comer got the wins on the mound for the Knights. Marty Hannon and Owen Kelly each had five RBI over the two games.

SOFTBALL

• SOUTH LYON TAKES TWO: The South Lyon softball team earned a pair of wins over Milford on Tuesday, 19-9 and 5-2.

Ava Bradshaw got the win in the circle for both games and combined for 24 strikeouts over the two games.

Bradshaw also homered on the day, while Grace Walters had two home runs.

• TROY TOPS SHRINE: The Troy softball team defeated Royal Oak Shrine 11-1 and 5-2 on Tuesday night.

Kayla Ziemke pitched a no-hitter in the opener, recording 14 strikeouts in the win.

Avery Allen had an inside-the-park home run during the doublehead­er.

GIRLS SOCCER

• SHRINE 2, BISHOP FOLEY 0: The Royal Oak Shrine girls soccer team picked up a 2-0 win over Madison Heights Bishop Foley on Tuesday.

Norah Tisko scored both goals for the Knights in the victory.

BOYS LACROSSE

• BIRMINGHAM 7, LAKE ORION 5: The Birmingham Unified lacrosse team earned a 7-5 win over Lake Orion on Tuesday night.

The Bulldogs trailed 4-2 at halftime, but rallied in the second half.

Jonny Cross had three goals to lead Birmingham, while Brendan Lamb scored twice.

Jackson Tinsley had 12 saves in the net for Birmingham.

GIRLS TENNIS

• MILFORD 9, KETTERING 0: The Milford tennis team earned a 9-0 win over Waterford Kettering on Tuesday evening.

Singles winners for the Mavericks were No. 1 Caroline Colt, No. 2 Grace Sarafa, No. 3 Sloane Dietz and No. 4 Grace McBride.

Doubles winners for Milford were No. 1 Erin Scheske and Dyana Rice, No. 2 Devin Chaldecott and Mia Rice, No. 3 Maddie Melody and Phoebe Stark, No. 4 Colleen McMillen and Julia Salvati, and No. 5 Erika Lakkides and Molly Weisberg.
