Lamphere adding more football hardware

- By Scott Burnstein

The table is set. The meal is glorious. The trophy case just got a little more crowded and might be adding more hardware soon.

Madison Heights Lamphere’s football team gobbled up its second consecutive MAC Bronze title last week and is primed for a playoff run. Lamphere is 7-1 on the season following a 62-46 win over Marysville on Friday.

Rams first-year head coach Ray Ostrowski, who came over in the offseason from a defensive coordinator post at St. Clair Shores Lakeshore upon Art Maisano’s retirement, was embraced by his new program quickly.

“We’re playing hungry and we became a family really fast,” he said. “These seniors have built a culture of hard work, commitment and dedication to a common purpose over the last four years. In high school football, seniors win you ball games. Experience wins you ball games.”

Senior quarterback Nick Kristich has been the picture of consistency and is in his third year starting under center for the Rams. Allstate tailback Nico Hernandez, also a senior, is one of the most electric runners in the MAC.

Junior receivers Semaj Ramsay and Aidan Robinette are both big-play threats downfield. Freakish Tristan Gist is tearing up the gridiron on both sides of the ball, having already caught six touchdowns at tight end and returned five interceptions from his spot on defense at outside linebacker. Drew Webster brings the pain at another linebacker spot and is one of the league’s most technically sound tacklers.

A couple diaper dandies are holding things down in the secondary. Freshmen Amaleki Harris and Aidan Grzesikowski are showing off the future, as Harris is the club’s top cover corner and Grzesikowski leads the team with four interceptions.

“The young players have adjusted and adapted as well as any coach could possibly ask,” Os-

trowski said.

North by Northwest

Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest has hired Mike Griffin as its new head boys basketball coach. Griffin previously led programs at Sterling Heights (boys) and Lake Orion (girls) and replaces Steve Lemke, a former Crusaders star hoopster in the 1990s.
