Stagecrafters closes with 2021 ‘Cinderella’

- By Anne Erickson

Stagecrafters in Royal Oak is coming up on the final production of the 2021 season. With the return of in-person events this year, it’s been a season like never before.

For its final 2021 show, Stagecrafters will present a musical favorite: Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Broadway version of “Cinderella,” running Nov. 12 to Dec. 5 at the Baldwin Theatre.

“Cinderella is a story we have seen re-created so many times, and I think that’s because the story and message are still so relevant in our society today,” director Jeff LaMothe says. “‘Cinderella’ is a feel-good musical that celebrates love, and helps transport the audience to a different world. After the last year and a half, I think everyone could use a little escape!”

The role of Cinderella is played by Rebekah Priess, and Jeff LaMothe says she’s “absolutely stunning” in the role.

“I think its extremely important to have a leading actress who is capable and up to the task of being able to lead a production like this and at times, carry a lot of weight on her shoulders, and Rebekah makes it look easy,” he says. “She checks all of the boxes and delivers a really captivating performance that I can’t wait for the audience to see. Rebekah is poised, driven and extremely talented.”

LaMothe has been involved with Stagecrafters for the past six years, mainly acting. Cinderella marks his first time directing for the company. He’s loving the experience.

“Hands down, my favorite part of directing this show is getting to work with some of the most talented people I have ever had the opportunity to work with,”LaMothe says. “There are so many individuals working on this production who are masters of their craft, from costumes to choreography to lighting. Everyone is so incredibly talented, and that’s not even mentioning the cast! Getting to work with these people every day and bring such a wonderful story to life has been a blast!”

Audience members might step away from “Cinderella” learning some life lessons, too.

“I think the most important lesson it teaches is the importance of confidence and having courage, even when it is not the easiest thing to do,”LaMothe says. “I hope it shows children to always keep their head up and that it’s never too difficult to show kindness.”

Stagecrafters presents “Cinderella” from Nov. 12-Dec. 5, 2021, at the Baldwin Theatre in downtown Royal Oak. The show is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of The Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization. Tickets are $35 at stagecrafters. org. There also is a VIP ticket option for $60, which includes dinner.

Stagecrafters plans pandemic safety protocols for this show. All Stagecrafters cast, crew, musicians and volunteers must either be vaccinated or show a recent COVID test before entering the building. As for patrons, everyone must wear a mask inside the building. Stagecrafters’ full COVID-19 policy is on at stagecrafters.org under “your visit” and each show page.
