Hayner, Lewis Robert, November 1922 19, November 13, 2021. Lewis Robert Hayner of Rochester Hills, Michigan passed away on November 13, 2021 at the age of 98. Born in Detroit, Michigan in 1922, Lewis grew up as an avid boxer and football player in the heart of Detroit before setMichiwi­th tling in Pontiac, gan his wife Mary. Lewis was a natural born teacher and began his career in education as an English instructor, at St. James High in Ferndale, Michigan where he also coached baseball, basketball and football. In

addition, he later coached both the boys and girls tennis teams, during a stint at Pontiac Catholic. From there he continued his career at Pontiac Central High School where he taught for more than

40 years. During that time, he developed the only public high school philosophy course in the state

of Michigan, at the time. His passion for debating ideas and imparting knowledge on young minds was so evident that it often had a profound effect on his students. It is not uncommon to this day for family members to encounter a former pupil, who eagerly states, “Mr. Hayner was the teacher I remember most.” Following his retirement from Pontiac Central, Lewis continued his calling at Oakland Community College and Oakland University, where he taught Ethics for another 25 years. Throughout his career, Lewis never considered his profession a job, as he often commented “And, to think they paid me.” Not only was he a renowned

educator, he was also a loving husband, father, grandfathe­r and great-grandfathe­r. With his wife of 64 years, he raised three children, Marylou (Timothy), Lewis James and Patrick Anthony. He was also a proud and dedicated grandfathe­r to Theresa Mullane (Nick) and loved her three children Nicholas, Sophia and Vivian. His zest for learning never ceased throughout his long life.
