-

The Coast Guard Foundation announced a record number of scholarship awards for the 2017-2018 academic year to assist Coast Guard families in achieving their education goals.

A total of 166 new students will receive Coast Guard Foundation scholarships this year, a 30 percent increase from last year, and the number is expected to increase in 2018. Four of this year’s recipients are class valedictorians and two are salutatorians, 27 had a high-school GPA of 4.0 or higher, and one-third are STEM majors.

Combined with multiyear scholarship recipients and three Fallen Heroes scholars, the Coast Guard Foundation is providing $500,000 to support 179 students this year.

In the 27 years of this program, the foundation has paid out more than $4.7 million to more than 780 college-age students.

“The brave men and women of the Coast Guard are the epitome of dedication and commitment,” said Susan Ludwig, president of the Coast Guard Foundation. “Their children have again and again demonstrated that they too hold themselves to that same high standard. We are proud to give back to these young individuals by investing in their future. We believe that it is an investment that will benefit these families and ultimately our country.”
