Keeping their focus for fourth straight win

The streak is second-longest in team history

Soccer is a game that can be complex. More so, it’s a sport where momentum can be as much a part of earning success as skill.

When a team doesn’t have it, it can seem as if nothing goes right. When a team has it, it appears as if it can do nothing wrong.

For San Antonio FC, the latter has been its existence the past two weeks, turning a season that was struck in neutral into one where the possibilities seem endless.

The trend continued as Ever Guzman and Darnell King each scored goals and SAFC topped LA Galaxy II 2-1 Saturday in a United Soccer League match before 7,447 at Toyota Field.

It was the local club’s fourth straight league win, the second-longest streak in franchise history.

“I thought from start to finish, we played well,” SAFC coach Darren Powell said.

“We got two good goals, I think, tonight in key moments in the game. We got three points. When everybody wakes up tomorrow morning, there’s three points on the table that help us get closer to our goal. We can’t look back. We have to look forward all the time to make sure that we learn from the past and to make sure that we execute in the future.”

The approach has been instrumental in the recent surge by SAFC (9-5-7, 34 points), which left Toyota

Field in sixth place in the Western Conference.

“Chemistry is definitely coming along with everybody,” King said. “We’re gelling well.”

It showed as SAFC led 2-0 only 10 minutes into the second half as Guzman tapped in a pass from Ethan Bryant in the 50th minute. It was Guzman’s third goal in four games.

SAFC led 1-0 at halftime as King ran onto a loose ball and drilled a live-drive into the upper right corner in the 20th minute. It was King’s first goal of the season and came during a flurry that saw defensive mates Cyprian Hedrick and Stephen McCarthy each attempt bicycle kicks.

“Obviously, my first job is defense,” King said. “But if I can get a chance anytime to score a goal, it’s always great to do. I’m glad I could contribute to the team.”

Frank Lopez scored in second-half stoppage time for LA Galaxy (5-12-5).
