For 3rd straight year, Broadway Bank No. 1

- By Brandon Lingle STAFF WRITER

Broadway Bank’s staff earlier this year scrambled to deliver nearly $400 million to San Antonio-area businesses under the Paycheck Protection Program despite obstacles posed by the pandemic.

David Bohne, Broadway Bank’s CEO and president, is proud of his team and said the PPP is one example of how they came together this year to support the community.

“We talk a lot aboutwhat it means to be a Broadway Banker, and that it’s great to be a Broadway Banker,” he said. “It’s been even a better year to be a Broadway Banker because we’ve overcome so many challenges and the work environment is completely different.”

For the third consecutive year, the financial institution earned the Top Workplaces honor for large employers in the San Antonio area with at least 500 workers.

Additionally, Bohne garnered the Leadership award for the large employer category.

The bank placed first among 14 participants.

Security Services Federal Credit Union followed Broadway, appearing on the list for the 10th straight year.

The Hartford Insurance Group ranked third, its10th consecutive year on the list.

“We’re very, very proud of what we do and very proud of our team,” Bohne said. “For us, it’s that reinforcement and recognition of a culture that’s 79 years young and continuing to prove that taking care of our employees, taking care of our customers and taking care of the community is a model that works for us.”

Broadway Bank is the 31st-largest bank in Texas and the third-largest commercial bank based in San Antonio, with roughly $4.5 billion in assets as of June 30. It has about 630 employees and 35 locations.

Army Col. Charles E.

Cheever Sr., a judge advocate at Fort Sam Houston, and his wife, Elizabeth Cheever, founded the bank in 1941with $60,000 in capital. Considered San Antonio’s first suburban bank, their first location was at 5044 Broadway.

The Cheevers had a mantra that the bank still uses today Bohne said:“We take care of the employees, the employees will take care of the customers, and then the numbers will take care of themselves.”

One example of this approach: Broadway Bank provided each employee a cash stipend at the beginning of the pandemic, according to Bohne. He said it was a statement from the Cheever family that said, “Hey, we’re all in this together,” and to reinforce to employees that the bank would be there to support them.

The institution offers competitive salaries and a benefits package that includes medical, dental and vision insurance, life and disability insurance, 401(k) plan and profit-sharing, tuition reimbursement, paid time off, health and wellness events, and discounted banking services.

“We’ve still got people that are juggling being a banker, trying to be a mom and dad, trying to be a spouse and trying to keep their kids educated, keep them safe and still continue towork,” he said. “It’s been an interesting and trying time. But it’s also been very rewarding when you see everybody solving things together, trying to come up with solutions and then still making sure that we’re successful atwork, at home and in our families.”

Bohne said the PPP came two weeks after the bank shifted to working from home and his organization had a choice.

“We can either take the approach that this is really, really hard, and we’re not going to do it. Or we could sit there, roll up our sleeves,” he said. “Our teamsaidwe’re going to figure this thing out, and so it was very rewarding.”

The pandemic challenged Broadway’s workforce to adapt to new ways of doing business.
