Oak Oak Hills Hills

Suburban community has style of its own

- By Lisa Harrison Rivas

Most of San Antonio’s Oak Hills neighborhood was once part of the T.C. Frost Ranch. In the mid1950s, early advertisements for the development painted the picture of the rambling ranch-style house, high elevation with a view, and homesites created by nature. The ranch-style homes had features such as built-in shelves and appliances, intercoms, sunken tubs and wet bars.

Today, those homes, mature oak trees, large lots and parks continue to attract homebuyers. Homes prices in Oak Hills vary quite a bit. For example, properties currently on the market include an 8,063 squarefoot house, built in 1966, that is listed for $1 million and a 2,089 square-foot home, built in 1978, priced at $299,000. Nearby there are numerous townhomes, condos and apartments for sale or rent. Listings include a two-bedroom, two-bathroom condo selling for $115,000 and a two-bedroom, two-bath condo renting for $1,295 a month.

Students in the area attend schools in the Northside Independent School District or the

San Antonio Independent School District. In 2019, both districts earned an overall score of B in the Texas Education Agency’s annual ratings.

If you drive through the Oak Hills, you’ll see a variety of mid-century architecture styles. According to sanantonio.gov, the two-story house at 4017 Greensboro Drive is believed to be the oldest surviving house in Oak Hills. The five-bedroom, five-bath home, built in 1939, belonged to architect Robert Ayres. Ayres and his father, acclaimed Texas architect Atlee B. Ayres, designed numerous homes and landmarks in San Antonio including the Smith-Young Tower and the administration building at Randolph Air Force Base referred to as the “Taj Mahal.”

Oak Hills is about 9 miles from downtown San Antonio. The community is surrounded by Loop

410, Callaghan, Fredericksburg, and Babcock roads. It’s less than 2 miles from the South Texas Medical Center that has more than 45 clinics and 12 major hospitals.

The Oak Hills Country Club at 5403 Fredericksburg Road is among the country’s top country clubs. The private member-owned country club spans 170 acres and has hosted numerous PGA Tour events. It was founded in 1922 as the Alamo Country Club and designed by renowned architect A.W. Tillinghast.

Members enjoy amenities such as a Junior Olympic-size swimming pool, 10-court tennis facility, co-ed fitness center, and casual and formal dining options.

Oak Hills residents don’t have to go far to find local businesses, shops and restaurants. Wonderland of the Americas mall at Loop 410 and I-10 on Fredericksburg Road is approximately 5 miles from Oak Hills.

If you have a taste for African Cuisine, check out Rehoboth EritreanEthiopian Cuisine at 1721 Babcock Road. Menu items include Vegan Soup, Chicken Stew, and several dishes made with beef, goat, and lamb.

Family-owned Nadler’s Bakery &

Deli has been in business since 1963.

It’s billed as San Antonio’s oldest bakery and known for its unique wedding cakes and signature cakes — including the popular Strawberry Whip Cream Cake. The restaurant at 1621 Babcock Road also serves breakfast and lunch.

The central location, easy access to freeways, hospitals and retailers are just a few of the reasons many find Oak Hills the ideal community.
