No. 2 Baylor romps in its delayed opener

MaCio Teague scored 21 points and No. 2 Baylor won its delayed season opener 112-82 over Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday night at Las Vegas.

Baylor, which adjusted its opening schedule after coach Scott Drew tested positive for COVID-19, shot 45-for-80 (56.3 percent) from the floor, including 15-for-27 (55.6 percent) from 3-point range.

Davion Mitchell finished with 18 points for the Bears (1-0). Jared Butler and LJ Cryer each scored 17 and Adam Flagler chipped in 12.

Cedric Russell led the Ragin Cajuns (0-1) with 26 points.

The Bears were supposed to open the season with two games in Connecticu­t, but didn’t make the trip.

VIRGINIA TECH 81

NO. 3 VILLANOVA 73 (OT)

Keve Aluma scored 23 points and Nahiem Alleyne added 20 as the Hokies upset the Wildcats in overtime at Uncasville, Conn.

Collin Gillespie led the Wildcats (2-1) with a game-high 25 points.

NO. 9 DUKE 81, COPPIN ST. 71

Freshman Jalen Johnson had 19 points, 19 rebounds and four blocks to help Duke overcome a turnover-filled performanc­e and beat Coppin State 81-71 in Saturday’s delayed season opener for both teams at Durham, N.C.

Travis Evee had 24 points as the Owls routed NAIA-member Our Lady of the Lake at San Antonio.

Evee made 6 of 9 3-pointers. Payton Moore had 14 points for Rice (2-0).

Ethan White had 12 points for the Saints. Jordan Embry added

10 points.

OKLAHOMA ST. 85 TEXAS SOUTHERN 65

Cade Cunningham scored 20 points and fellow freshman Rondel Walker chipped in 19 points with three 3-pointers off the bench to help the host Cowboys beat the Tigers.

The Cowboys (2-0) pulled away for good with an 8-0 run early in the second half that made it 49-32 on Ferron Flavors Jr.’s 3-pointer.

Georgetown-transfer Galen Alexander led the Tigers (0-2) with 22 points on 8-of-18 shooting.

TCU 70, TULSA 65

Kevin Samuel scored 16 points and tied his career high with 18 rebounds and the Horned Frogs beat the Hurricane at the Hall of Fame Classic in Kansas City, Mo.

Aaron Henry had 14 points, eight rebounds, four blocks and

three assists to help the No. 13 Spartans( 2 -0) win at home.

Women

NO. 13 TEXAS A&M 93 NO. 19 DEPAUL 91

Kayla Wells scored 22 points, N’dea Jones had a double-double and the Aggies edged the Blue Demons on Saturday at Chicago.

Wells made two free throws with 4.9 seconds left to put the Aggies up 93-90 and then Aaliyah Wilson fouled DePaul’s

Lexi Held with 0.9 seconds to go. Held missed the first free throw, negating a chance for an intentiona­l miss and putback on the second attempt so she made it.

With less than a second, there wasn’t enough time for an intentiona­l miss, and 3-point attempt.

Jones scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

The Aggies (2-0) shot 61 percent, making all three of their 3-pointers and, with Ciera Johnson grabbing 12 rebounds, dominated the boards 44-27. They scored 54 points in the paint.

DePaul (0-1), which played the game with masks on, got 24 points from Dee Bekelja, who was 10 of 15 with four 3-pointers. Deja Church added 23 and Sonya Morris 22 and Held had 17.

The Blue Demons only made 9 of 33 3-pointers but forced A&M into 27 turnovers

Destanni Henderson and Zia Cooke each scored 19 points, and the Gamecocks beat South Dakota in the Bad Boy Mowers Crossover Classic at Sioux Falls, S.D.

Henderson finished two points shy of a career high. She was 8 of 13 from the floor and had nine rebounds for the Gamecocks (2-0).

Chloe Lamb led South Dakota (0-1) with 18 points.

NO. 10 OREGON 116 SEATTLE 51

Taylor Mikesell scored 28 points and the Ducks opened the season with a win at Eugene, Ore.

Center Sedona Prince had 17 points for Oregon. Senior forward Lydia Giomi added 15 points and 13 rebounds.

Oregon (1-0) is replacing four starters after it went 32-2 last season, including three firstround picks in the WNBA draft.

SOUTH DAKOTA 76 NO. 15 IOWA ST. 69

Haley Greer scored 20 points and Myah Selland added 19 to help host South Dakota State beat the Cyclones in the opener for both teams.

All-American Ashley Joens had 35 points and 12 rebounds for the Cyclones (1-1). They played without coach Bill Fennelly due to COVID-19 protocol.
