Drive away that holiday boredom.

- By Richard A. Marini STAFF WRITER

It’s the holiday season, and the annual family get-together has been canceled for coronavirus reasons. So it’s just you and the fam, watching “A Christmas Story” and “It’s a Wonderful Life” on an endless loop.

Before you break out the eggnog, again, how about packing everyone into the car and taking a old-fashioned family drive through the Texas Hill Country?

We’ve compiled three great scenic drives you can do in less than a day, including several can’t-miss attractions and, with help from Express-News dining critic Mike Sutter, a recommended restaurant for a bite to eat along the way.

Remember, the hours these places are open can be irregular, so call ahead first.

Readers, start your engines.

Texas Twisted Sisters

From Leakey, take RR 337 west to Camp Wood, turn right on Texas 55 (Nueces Street), right on RR 335, right on Texas 41, right on RR 336 back to Leakey. Distance: 95 miles.

Texas Twisted Sisters

Perhaps the most thrilling — and challenging — drive in Texas. If you’re not itching to get behind the wheel after contemplating these twisty, turny byways, you may want to consider surrendering you driver’s license. This circuit is also is a favorite of motorcyclists, so keep your eyes — and ears — open.

Don’t miss:

San Lorenzo de la Santa Cruz Mission: 675 N. Texas 55, Camp Wood. The archaeological site of a short-lived (1762-69) Spanish mission is still being developed, with interpretive signs planned. But it’s open and available for the curious to check out.

Devil’s Sinkhole State Natural Area: 101 N. Sweeten St., Rocksprings, 830-683-2287, tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/ devils-sinkhole. About 5 miles off the route, this 140-foot deep sinkhole is the largest single chamber cave in the state. In summer, it’s home to some 3 million Mexican free-tailed bats, which emerge en masse each evening. Guided tours leave at 1 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday, and reservations are encouraged.

Where to go for a bite: Camp Wood Cafe, 110 N. Nueces St., Camp Wood, 830-597-2284, campwoodcafe.com. This is a melting pot of German (bratwurst), American (burgers, steak) and Italian dishes (pizza, spaghetti and meatballs), all packed into a pocket-size country diner.

2 Sister Creek Vineyards, 1142 Sisterdale Road, Boerne, 830-324-6704, sistercreekvineyards.com.

3 Marlowe Candle Co., 1203 Sisterdale Road, Boerne, 830-324-6895, marlowecandlecompany.com.
