The A-List
OUR PICKS FOR WHAT TO SEE AND DO THIS WEEK
1. Home video
Director Alejandro González Iñárritu arrived fully formed in 2000 with his first feature, “Amores Perros,” an explosive, multilayered depiction of Mexico City centered on a car crash. This deluxe reissue includes a new documentary about the movie and a new conversation with the director, who went on to win Oscars for “Birdman” and “The Revenant.”
Criterion Collection Blu-ray and DVD on sale Tuesday.
2. Streaming
The Oscar buzz is getting deafening for Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman, in his final film, for their performances in “Ma Rainey’s
Black Bottom.” It’s an adaptation of an August Wilson play set in a Chicago recording studio in the 1920s, where the famous blues singer (Davis) butts heads with white music producers and a trumpet player (Boseman) who craves her success.
Available Friday on Netflix after a short theatrical run.
3. Album
Paul McCartney cobbled together a little something while stuck at home this year: a new album titled “McCartney III.” Like its self-titled predecessors, which gave the world “Maybe I’m Amazed” (from “McCartney” in 1970) and “Coming Up” (“McCartney II,” 1980), it’s a true solo album, with the former Beatle, 78, playing all the instruments.
On sale Friday.
4. Comedy
Stand-up comic Paul Virzi has toured with Bill Burr, and the two could almost be a matched set. Like Burr, New Yorker Virzi has a lot of attitude, doesn’t suffer fools lightly and will probably step on some toes. He’s capable of deep thinking, too, like why St. Peter has the worst job in heaven.
7:30 and 9:45 p.m. Friday, 7 and 9:30 p.m. Saturday, 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Laugh Out Loud Comedy Club, 618 NW Loop 410. $34-$108 for tables of two, four or six, improvtx.com/ sanantonio.
5. Movie
You’re familiar with “A Christmas Story,” the holiday perennial about Ralphie’s quest for a Red Ryder BB Gun. But did you know the movie’s director, Bob Clark, also was responsible for another yuletide treat? “Black Christmas,” which stars Olivia Hussey (“Romeo & Juliet”), Margot Kidder (“Superman”) and Andrea Martin (“SCTV”) as sorority sisters in peril, is considered one of the first slasher movies and was a big influence on “Halloween.”
11:15 p.m. Saturday, The Drivein at Fiesta Texas, 17000 W. Interstate 10 S. $24-$28.50 per vehicle depending on number of occupants; military discounts available, rooftop cinemaclub.com/san-antonio.
