One arrested, another sought in double killing
Police arrested a man accused of slaying two people, including a 14-year-old boy, in a Dec. 17 Northeast Side shooting.
Jaylen Dears, 17, is charged with capital murder in the death of Bobby Lee Carter Jr., 14, and Robert Smith, 20. His bail is set at $500,000.
Dears was apprehended Christmas Eve in the 8800 block of Willmon Way.
Police on Friday were asking for the public's help in finding a second suspect, whom they identified as James Alexander Miller, 18.
Sheriff's deputies found Carter and Smith, wounded, after responding to reports of a shooting in the 7300 block of Rubens Drive about 9 p.m. on Dec. 17.
Investigators said Smith was buying marijuana from Carter. Smith was sitting in a car with Carter and two others when the suspects drove up, witnesses told police.
According to Dears' arrest affidavit, witnesses told police Dears and Miller stood on the passenger side and fired several shots into the red Chevrolet Malibu where Carter and Smith sat with two others.
The witnesses told detectives they ducked for cover during the shooting.
Carter and Smith were hit several times in the upper body, investigators said. The two were taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center where they later died, according to court records.
The shooting was captured by nearby security camera, the affidavit states.
As investigators searched the scene, they found a phone on the ground they said belongs to Miller.
A witness also told deputies that Smith said he was with Dears and Miller in a text message about an hour before the shooting was reported.
Anyone with information on Miller's whereabouts is asked to contact the sheriff's office at (210) 335-6000 or email BCSOTIPS@bexar.org.
