The A-List
OUR PICKS FOR WHAT TO SEE AND DO THIS WEEK
1. Streaming
Like “Schitt’s Creek,” “Jann” isa critically acclaimed Canadian sitcom in search of a U.S. audience. Singer-songwriter Jann Arden, best known here for her ’90s hit “Insensitive,” plays a fictionalized version of herself — a musician past her peak who wants to take another crack at fame.
Seasons one and two available Friday on Hulu.
2. Movie
“The Little Things” has a starry cast for what looks like a wellmade but conventional crime drama: The leads are all Oscar winners. Denzel Washington plays a deputy sheriff who teams up with a police detective (Rami Malek) to stop a serial killer in Los Angeles. Jared Leto plays their prime suspect.
Opens Friday in theaters and on HBO Max.
3. Book
A teenage girl walks through rural Ghana in Hugo Award-winning author Nnedi Okorafor’s new novel, the slim and strange “Remote Control” ($19.99, tordotcom). Something — alien or ancient — has given her the power to take lives in a glow of light, a power many fear but some in great pain seek out.
On sale now.
4. Stage
Jaston Williams, best-known for co-creating and co-starring for decades in “Greater Tuna” and its sequels, spent a few days of the pandemic shooting “I Saw the Lights” in Austin with the intent of streaming it. He also wrote the script, which has a series of characters (all played by Williams) sharing their memories of seeing some mysterious lights over Lubbock in 1951.
7 p.m. Friday, austintheatre.org. $25 general admission; $35 for VIP screening, which includes a Q&A.
5. Album
On the title track of her new album, folk singer Ani Di Franco proposes “Revolutionary Love” as a solution to personal and political divisions. Some anger lingers in the lyrics, but the mellow pop jazz that carries them is a balm.
Available Friday.
