Seven from area named first-team All-State
The Texas Sports Writers Association selected seven San Antonio area football players for first-team AllState honors.
Three were from Class 5A: Southside senior linebacker Micah Young, Boerne Champion senior punter Ethan Laing and Seguin senior center Daniel Gonzalez.
Class 4A was represented by Navarro senior offensive linemen Cole Booker and Jon Gilbert.
Jourdanton senior wide receiver Jarel Lilly earned Class 3A first-team honors, and Falls City offensive lineman Jacob Hofauer made the Class 2A first team.
Young, who’s headed to Wyoming, also was named the 2020 Express-News Defensive Player of the Year. He recorded 110 tackles, five sacks, six pass breakups and two forced fumbled in seven games.
Laing averaged 41.7 yards on 27 punts with a long of 57 yards and 10 inside the 20-yard line. He will play at UTSA as a preferred walk-on.
Gonzalez was part of an offensive line that blocked for running back Marques Washington, who rushed for 1,324 yards and 15 touchdowns. Seguin averaged 455.1 total yards per game.
Gonzalez scored 57 knockdowns and graded at 95 percent. He did not allow a sack in 631 snaps.
Booker, a guard, recorded 146 pancakes and graded at 96 percent. He was selected District 14-4A-II cooffensive lineman of the year.
Gilbert, a center, had 65 pancakes and graded at 93 percent.
Lilly, who is signed with Texas Lutheran, caught 85 passes for 1,603 yards and 19 touchdowns. He also was named District 14-3A-I coMVP.
Hofauer, a guard, had 37 pancakes and graded at 98 percent. He was the District 16-2A-II MVP.
The two-way player also earned honorable mention honors as a defensive lineman after recording 70 tackles, three sacks, three fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles.
A panel of sports writers from around the state selected the team using information provided by coaches. These teams replace the Associated Press’ All-State teams, which were discontinued this season.
