The A-List
OUR PICKS FOR WHAT TO SEE AND DO THIS WEEK
1. Concert
Liz Phair is playing her first streaming concert to celebrate the release of a new song, “Hey Lou,” an odd and affectionate tribute to Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson. Phair promises to play new songs and old with Brad Wood, who has been her musical collaborator since “Exile in Guyville,” her ’90s indie classic. 9 p.m. Wednesday. $20 at lizphairofficial.com; ticket buyers will receive a link to the live event.
2. Exhibit
“Limitless! Five Women Reshape Contemporary Art,” the McNay Art Museum’s big spring show, includes an infinity room by Yayoi Kusama. “Aftermath of Obliteration of Eternity,” another of Kusama’s infinity rooms, was the centerpiece of the McNay’s 2018 exhibit “Immersed.” There’s plenty of other cool stuff in the show, too, including the return of Sandy Skoglund’s playful cheesecurl-centric installation “The Cocktail Party” and another of her works, which is being displayed for the first time beyond New York. Opens Thursday. On view through Sept. 19, McNay Art Museum, 6000 N. New Braunfels. $10-$20; free for members, children 12 and younger and recipients of SNAP, WIC AND MAP. mcnayart.org.
3. Theater
The Public Theater of San Antonio will stream “Empanada,” San Antonio writer Anel I. Flores’ wellcrafted play exploring a Latina lesbian’s struggle to be open with God and her family about her sexuality. Satya Chavez stars.
Opens Thursday. Streamed 7:30 p.m. Thursdays-Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays through March 14. $25-$35,
4. Streaming
Paramount+, the poweredup version of CBS All Access that launches on Friday, is promising lots of goodies, including a “Frasier” revival and access to movies, such as “A Quiet Place 2,” just 45 days after they open in theaters. But the big attraction right off the bat is absorbent, yellow and porous: “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run,” intended for theatrical release before the pandemic, and a new series, “Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years,” will both debut with the new streaming service.
Movie and series available Thursday. $4.99-$9.99 per month; sign up at paramountplus.com.
