It’ll be a belly-busting bonanza as eight area chefs compete Oct. 9 at the Burger Showdown 2.0 at Brooster’s Backyard Icehouse.

The event challenges the cooks to sizzle up their most over-the-top take on burgers, which are served in smaller slider format at the event. The top chef as judged by event attendees will receive a trophy and cash prize.

The competition looks stiff, and attendees are definitely going to need extra napkins. Participating chefs are:

Diana Anderson of JD’s Chili Parlor, who will serve a mesquite-smoked barbecue burger, with whiskey-soaked caramelized onions.

Robert Cantu of the Thompson San Antonio — Riverwalk hotel with an aged marrow and candied bacon burger.

Adrian Cruz of Ghost Kitchens SA and Gunslingers, serving a version of his James Beard Award-winning concha burger.

Joseph Thadeus Martinez of Tributary at the San Antonio

Marriott Rivercenter, cooking a burger topped with goat cheese crema and chicken-fried jalapeños,

Joseph Perez of The Esquire

Tavern with a Waygu brisket burger topped with manchego cheese.

James Richard Smith of the Too Hot For TABC food truck,

preparing a sweet-and-spicy West Texas-inspired burger.

Toby Soto of the catering business Humo of San Antonio, making a burger with charred

Hatch crema, huitlacoche and nopales.

Ceasar Zepeda of Sangria on the Burg and Alamo Biscuit Co., making a burger topped with garlic confit, Gouda cheese and candied prosciutto.

Chef Edward Villarreal, who’s organizing the event, will provide french fries, and Cereal Killer Sweets will supply cookies for attendees.

Tickets for the event cost $55 and are available at eventbrite.com. A $75 VIP ticket will buy admission to the event 30 minutes early and a drink ticket. The bar will be open for customers wishing to buy drinks. A portion of the proceeds will provide fruit and vegetable boxes from Big State Produce Co. to hospitality industry workers and San Antonio families in need.

Burger Showdown 2.0: 5-8 p.m. Oct. 9 at Brooster’s Backyard Icehouse, 815 Pleasanton Road. More at Facebook: Burger Showdown 2.0.
