Iowa St. knocks Oklahoma St. from unbeaten ranks

-

AMES, Iowa — Iowa State stopped No. 8 Oklahoma State on a fourth down with just over a minute remaining to hang on for a 24-21 win Saturday at Jack Trice Stadium. OSU ran a quick pass outside to Brennan Presley and he was deemed down about three inches or so from the first down.

Oklahoma State (6-1) got the ball back with three minutes left and one timeout needing a field goal to tie. The Cowboys got inside Iowa State territory, but couldn’t get into field goal range to potentially send the game into overtime.

The game-winning score came courtesy of ISU running back Breece Hall. He scored in his 19th consecutive game when he ran for a four-yard TD with 5:29 to go and give Iowa State (5-2) its second lead of the game. The Cyclones never led until there were less than three minutes to go in the third quarter.

Oklahoma State responded midway through the fourth quarter when Spencer Sanders hit Tay Martin in an incredible pitch and catch. But Iowa State went 85 yards in six plays after that TD to retake the lead for good.

Sanders finished the game 15-of-24 passing for 225 yards and threw three touchdowns while Iowa State’s Brock Purdy was 27-of-33 for 307 yards and tossed two touchdowns. Both of those TD throws went to Xavier Hutchinson. He had 12 catches for 125 yards and also had a 51-yard TD nullified by a ridiculously bad taunting call after he mildly celebrated

while running into the end zone.

There are now four teams competing for two spots in the

Big 12 championship game midway through the conference season. No. 3 Oklahoma moved to 5-0 in the Big 12 with a sloppy win over Kansas on Saturday and is the only undefeated team in the conference.

KANSAS ST. 25, TEXAS TECH 24

Skylar Thompson passed for 296 yards and the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter and the Wildcats came up with sacks on the Red Raiders’ final two plays to take a victory at Lubbock.

Thompson’s TD pass to Deuce Vaughn with just over six minutes left helped the Wildcats snap an

eight-game Big 12 Conference losing streak going back to last year.

The Red Raiders (5-3, 2-3) were driving into field-goal range with two first downs, reaching KState’s 46-yard-line with three minutes to go. But the Wildcats’ defense came up big when Felix Anudike-Uzomah sacked Texas Tech quarterback Henry Colombi for a 6-yard loss and Nate Matlack dropped him for a 1-yard loss.

K-State (4-3, 1-3) fought back to take the 25-24 lead with a drive aided when Texas Tech’s Devin Drew was flagged for a hands-tothe-face penalty on a play that would have ended with the Wildcats facing fourth-and-16.

Instead, K-State got an automatic first down and Thompson threw four consecutive completions, the last to Vaughn for a 22-yard touchdown.

NO. 3 OKLAHOMA 35, KANSAS 23

Caleb Williams threw two touchdown passes, ran 40-yards for a score on a pivotal fourth down and the Sooners rallied to beat the Jayhawks at Lawrence, Kan.

The Sooners (8-0, 5-0 Big 12) trailed by double figures on two occasions — including 10-0 at the half —- but outscored the Jayhawks 35-13 in the second half to win their 16th straight game.

“I’m excited for the win, but we played poor football in the first half,” Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley said. “We couldn’t get Kansas off the field and missed several opportunities. I give our team credit for rising up. Kansas deserves a lot of credit, and they did a few things that gave us trouble.”

Jason Bean passed for 246 yards and a score for Kansas (1-6, 0-4), which led 17-7 late in the third quarter.

A 66-yard run by Trevon West sparked the Oklahoma offense after that. and scored two plays later for their first lead, 21-17, early in the fourth quarter.

MCNEESE 28 INCARNATE WORD 20

Deonta McMahon rushed for two touchdowns, the Cowboys’ defense intercepted three passes, despite allowing 455 yards passing to hold off Incarnate Word at Lake Charles, La..

McNeese’s Colby Richardson, Jarrius Wallace and Mason Kinsey each intercepted a pass by Cameron

Ward, who completed 39 of 59 passes for 455 yards with two touchdowns, three interceptions and a lost fumble.

The McNeese defense had 10 sacks, including Kordell Williams’ stop on the final play by UIW.

TRINITY 66, SEWANEE 7

Tucker Horn passed for 226 yards and four touchdowns and the unbeaten Tigers built a 38-0 lead by halftime en route to a blowout at Sewanee, Tenn.
